Teacher-directed activities in the school library media center would quickly result in only one class or one group using the library at a time, thereby denying access to the rest of the school. The accomplished school library media specialist learns how to multitask learning opportunities for students. This requires a knowledge of the best instructional strategies, a knowledge of the curriculum, and the possession of a repertoire of classroom management strategies that can operate as the glue that makes these differing processes effective.

The same format as the standards for other subject areas. The ten standards are divided into three areas, following the headings of what library media specialists know, what they can do, and how they grow as professionals. There will always be some overlap to the standards when following this format, since what teachers do naturally comes from what they know, and how teachers grow as professionals stems from what they know and can do. The most common flaw in reading the standards is to read for the main idea, skipping over all of the phrases that could be interpreted as less important.
